Sun Microsystems
Enterprise Content Management

Sun Microsystems is the leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software, and services that power the Internet. Sun Microsystems' success is based on a single vision, "The Network Is The ComputerT" and Sun's latest innovation, the "Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE)," is Sun's standards-based software vision, architecture, platform, and expertise for building and deploying Services on Demand.

Client Opportunity
  • Sun Microsystems sought a complete overhaul of Sun ONE, its key strategic asset. Sun required a complete overhaul of its existing site including new branding, look and feel, inclusion of iPlanet.com, and improvements to the current content management system.
  • Sun.com had grown organically over the past six years to become an extremely large property with over 40,000 pages.
  • In addition to the extremely large volume of pages, the content was unstructured, did not follow templates, and was not created via standardized publishing processes.

Niteo's Solution
  • Niteo began the engagement by auditing and analyzing existing content and identifying and cataloging all current site content.
  • A page prioritization and tiered treatment system was created to ensure resources were focused on the most important areas of the site.
  • Programmatic scripts were utilized to convert existing content to the new look and feel. Page structure and data capture records (DCRs) were stored in Interwoven TeamSite.
  • The Interwoven TeamSite user interface was customized to improve usability and acceptance by users of the system.
  • A comprehensive change management and communications program was launched to ensure all stakeholders were aligned, informed and helped to drive overall project success.
  • Niteo and frog design partnered to redesign and implement sun.com.

Client Result
  • 40,000 pages were converted and migrated in eight weeks.
  • Design time for additional sites was reduced from six weeks to five days based on reutilization of component-based design.
  • Cost of ownership was lowered through reduced maintenance and via automated scripts and templates.
