Sun Microsystems
Sun ONE Content Web Services

Sun Microsystems is the leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software, and services that power the Internet. Sun Microsystems' success is based on a single vision, "The Network Is The ComputerT" and Sun's latest innovation, the "Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE)," is Sun's standards-based software vision, architecture, platform, and expertise for building and deploying Services on Demand.

Client Opportunity
  • Sun Microsystems successfully released the Solaris 9 Operating Environment and, shortly afterwards, the Sun ONE Application Server, Platform Edition, two core Sun ONE platform components. The Sun ONE Product Marketing team wanted to continue the momentum from these releases and demonstrate how Sun ONE easily enables the Services on Demand vision.
  • The demo needed to quickly, simply and inexpensively deploy a services-based application that showcases the platform for potential customers and provides value to Sun ONE partners.

Niteo's Solution
  • Having recently partnered with Sun to complete the redesign and retooling of their product web content infrastructure, Niteo immediately proposed that Sun build upon this effort. By incorporating Sun's product content into a partner site, the solution would demonstrate a distributed, standards-based web service integration. Many customers might find such a task daunting, and they would expect the Sun ONE platform to enable such a solution.
  • Niteo recognized that the solution could be constructed simply with a copy of Solaris 9 and Sun's freely available Web Services Developer Pack. All of the necessary Sun ONE software was already in the platform: LDAP directory, Java, developer tools and an application server.
  • Niteo combined its Rapid Prototyping approach with Sun ONE methodologies to produce an initial prototype in two weeks.

Client Result
  • The project was completed on time and within the self-imposed 30-day launch deadline.
  • Internal Sun ONE content clients were provided with an alternate query web service.
  • Sun was provided with an innovative XML XPath-to-LDAP query capability.
